The Dark knight

Christopher Nolan is a very versatile director. He is both a skilled action director and an able character developer. Nolan's movies also have a deep moral undertone and plenty of substance. The Dark Knight is the best Batman movie ever made. The entire cast (Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman) makes a quality work. However, Heath Ledger's performance as Joker is completely on its own level. It's transcendent. It cannot be explained but must be seen and experienced.

Lost in Translation (directed by Sofia Coppola) is a very special movie. It has no storyline in the traditional sense of the word. Instead, it resembles structurally rather a poem or a dream. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a middle-aged actor, whose career is in decline. During filming of a whiskey advertisement in Tokyo, he becomes acquainted with the young Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson). The movie deals with such themes as one´s own identity, loneliness, aging, and the possibility of a new love. Its atmosphere is reflective. Bill Murray makes a memorable role as Bob Harris. Lost in Translation speaks to its viewers in a very touching and subtle way.

Witness

Witness is an Australian movie director´s Peter Weir's best movie. Harrison Ford is a Philadelphia police detective John Book and Kelly McGillis is Rachel, a young widow who belongs to an Amish-sect. The Witness describes the romance, which develops between John Book and Rachel. It is also a description of the difference between the Amish-sect and the outside world. The Amish-sect is naive, honest and non-violent, the outside world is violent and immoral. Witness is a great movie. Its direction, cinematography and quality of actor´s work are all at a very high level.

Jesus is brutally beaten and forced to carry his own cross to Golgotha, where he is crucified. The Passion of the Christ is an extremely brutal and violent movie. It is also extremely impressive, fascinating, dreamlike, and has an ability to silence its viewers. The cinematography and its colors were modelled after the paintings of an Italian painter Caravaggio. The Passion of the Christ is Mel Gibson's personal confession of faith- an impressive confession.

Jodie Foster is also convincing. The downside of the Silence of the lambs is its own genre. Several of its scenes are deeply shocking.

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (directed by Peter Jackson) is the first and the best part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. A lot of money and talent were spent in making this movie. And not in vain because the result is worth the investment. The choice of actors for different roles was very successful: Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Christopher Lee as Saruman, Ian Holm as Bilbo, etc. The whole production is characterized by quality and craftsmanship.
